As a photographer I often get asked, “when is the best time to schedule my family Session?” The best answer to that question is “NOW” as none of us knows what tomorrow holds. But here is a list of things to consider:
- SUNSET TIME: I typically shoot at golden hour, (within an hour of sunset time). That time changes everyday. If you have young children, consider their bed time, eating time, nap time. I choose to not shoot in the middle of the day to avoid harsh sunlight and give my clients the best image quality possible. And as you may know, in photography, light is everything!
- SEASON: each season has beauty and ups and downs. You may be wanting blossoms for your session, roses, tall grass, green trees, water play, or fall foliage. You may want to wear a light summer dress, or a warm sweater. Take your pick and start here.
- YOUR FAMILY LIFE: part of the year might be busier than other for you and your family. Consider choosing a time where things slow down a bit for you so you can enjoy the experience.
Here is some of my work from 2023 to give you an idea of what each month look like.
APRIL and MAY
Blossoms are usually around the last week of April/first week of May but can never be guaranteed as a storm can take them all down overnight. Spring is still beautiful and green, even after blossoms are gone and the weather is usually nice and mild.
JUNE
June is a great time for pictures with roses or greeneries (Rose gardens typically bloom from mid-June to mid-September in Omaha).
JULY
As summer can be hot and humid, I do offer to reschedule sessions when the weather is above 90F at sunset time. If you like green backgrounds, July is perfect for you and the tall grass starts looking really good around that time.
AUGUST
Similar weather and features as July. When booking in August, take a look at your back to school schedules and activities to avoid stress.
SEPTEMBER
Great for families with young children as the sunset time starts to be earlier in the day, allowing for your session to be scheduled after dinner but before bed time. Colors start changing, but the weather is still warm, which really helps with children’s moods. Parks are not as crowded with photographers as October.
OCTOBER
This is the MOST popular time for family sessions because of the gorgeous fall colors. This means that there are a lot of people at every good photography locations around Omaha, less rescheduling options and a little bit slower turn around on images as I am shooting most nights and editing images until midnight everyday. It does start getting colder as the leaves change but the weather is still usually pretty mild. Sunset time is also a lot earlier which can help with young children. I highly recommend booking during the week to limit crowds and have a more enjoyable experience.
NOVEMBER
This is typically when I shoot Christmas Tree Farm Sessions (before thanksgiving) but it is also a great time, if the weather permits, for field pictures. The sunset is usually beautiful and warm on the golden tall grass.
